Design and Manufacture of Concrete Elements to Prevent Acid Attack

Concrete Resistance towards Acid Attack - Part 2

The acid attack to the concrete can promote severe damage in the concrete. The chemical damage of the concrete decreases the time of service life and the security of the elements. The analysis of different characteristics of the concrete is necessary to prevent or minimize the acid attack. Those characteristics are related with the fresh and hardened concrete. The design and manufacture of a compact concrete with low porosity can substantially improve the durability of the concrete in contact with acids. However, while under conditions of exposure to strong acids, a supplementary protection of the surface in contact with the aggressive agent may be necessary, through the application of coatings.
