Heat curing techniques for precast concrete

The success of precast concrete technology is based mainly on production efficiency, cost- and time saving advantages, and a product quality that is generally superior compared to site cast concrete. A further benefit of the precast environment is the ability to employ intricate and effective curing methods. Compared to in situ manufacture, the development of concrete properties can be far more effectively controlled in precast operations, which commonly aim at high early age strength and fast formwork turnover. Excessive temperatures resulting from heat curing procedures may however result in durability problems, which emphasizes the need for a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms and effects of heat development in concrete at early ages. This paper discusses the effects of temperature on the development of concrete properties and evaluates common heat curing techniques for precast manufacture.
