Spectacular construction and renovation work was carried out on Highway 405 and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge over the Niagara Falls in 2005. The aims were to upgrade the old bridge connecting the USA with Canada to conform to the latest safety standards and optimise the traffic flow. This involved adding a new road surface to the 500 m long bridge, changing the carriageway configuration and including an emergency lane. Approach roads, dividers, and toll booths also had to be redesigned on both sides.
