Impact noise is created when structure-borne noise is generated by footsteps or knocking and walls and ceilings are excited to radiate airborne sound. In order to check structures with regard to impact noise, special standardised devices (e.g. hammer mill, rubber ball) are used to simulate such excitation. The noise generated is then measured in dB (decibels), whereby the stipulations for noise prevention in buildings is regulated by DIN 4109 in Germany.
