Innovative admixtures: A key componentsfor a sustainable concrete industry

BASF Construction Chemicals, 8048 Zurich, Switzerland

Cementitious materials have been in use for construction for about 9000 years. They have undergone numerous changes in composition, performances and applications. However, through the years concrete has remained the preferred material of the construction industry mainly for its low cost of materials and construction techniques. Every year more than 1 m3 of concrete is produced per person worldwide. Depletion of the natural resources has led to an increased concern for sustainability in the construction industry. It has been estimated that some 8 to 10% of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere is traceable to the construction industry (cement and steel production, aggregates processing, mixing, transporting and placing the concrete, etc).
