Interest of VHPC and UHPFRC for the precastconcrete industry

CERIB, 28231 Epernon, France

Very-High-Performance Concrete (VHPC) and Ultra-High-Performance Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) are the ultimate result of thirty years of advances in the optimization of the granular skeleton of concrete, admixtures, and the use of fibres. As defined in the recommendations of the Association Française de Génie Civil (AFGC), UHPFRC has a compressive strength in excess of 150 MPa. By definition, the performance of VHPC is between those of High Performance Concrete (HPC) and UHPFRC. The strength of VHPC is therefore between 100 and 150 MPa. But taking account only of their compressive strengths would be doing these concretes a grave injustice, for both differ from traditional concretes in a great many other interesting ways: bending strength; resistance to impact, abrasion, chemicals, and frost; and, in general terms, their durability and aesthetic qualities.
