South Africa in preparation forthe Soccer World Cup 2010

Precast concrete for large-scale projects

South Africa is the host nation of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. As a result of this, South Africa has invested billions of Euros in major infrastructure improvement projects around the country. A large portion of the budget has been assigned to creating some spectacular match venues while other projects such as transport infrastructure and electricity generation has been given some much needed financing. This paper presents an overview on the most prominent projects that were completed in view of the 2010 event, particularly focussing on sport stadia, airports and new transport systems. For the various projects, construction systems are discussed, highlighting the use of precast technology. Construction requirements, challenges, strategies, and system solutions, as well as the general advantages of precast technology for such large scale projects are presented.
