The influence of temperature on the workabilityof self-compacting concrete mixtures

Cement pastes and concrete mixtures

The results of experiments into the influence of temperature on the flow properties of cement pastes and concrete mixtures will be presented in this article. The rheological parameters were measured on the basis of technical experiments. The flow time T250 of the cement paste reduces as the temperature increases, whereas the slump does not change significantly. The behaviour of the concrete mixture is opposite; the slump becomes smaller and the flow time T50 increases. These tendencies remain unchanged over the course of time. As opposed to cement pastes, which exhibit better flow properties at higher temperatures, an increase in temperature has a negative effect on the workability of concrete mixtures. The illustrated experimental results prove that the influence of temperature on the workability of SCC mixtures is not necessarily predictable without error when based on the behaviour of the cement paste. Initial experiments into the change of the rheological properties of cement paste under the influence of temperature showed a qualitative correlation to SCC mixtures. The temperature of the self-compacting concrete mixture as well as the ambient temperature when pouring it are important influencing factors that need to be considered when designing the self-compacting properties.
