Davyhulme in Greater Manchester is one of the largest and oldest wastewater treatment works in England. It is currently being renovated and modernised by the British company United Utilities with an investment volume of 200 million British pounds. The plant serves over 1.2 million people in the region daily, in addition it processes wastewater from Trafford Park, Europe's largest industrial estate. In the course of the extensive building work, the conditions are to be set for new structures, the installation of new machinery and the introduction of new wastewater treatment processes. For instance, new technologies could be used in future for the production of high quality fertilisers and biogas from sewage sludge. One of the important goals of the building work is to make the wastewater treatment works cleaner and greener in order to further reduce the environmental impact of wastewater.
