Sustainable Bridge Construction Initiative in Malaysia

UHPC Precast Bridges

Dura Technology Sdn Bhd (DTSB) has pioneered research in the optimal use of steel fiber reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in bridge construction through its Sustainable Bridge Construction Initiative in Malaysia. To date, 88 UHPC bridges have been constructed and an additional 10 are under construction. Of the completed bridges, 84 of these are road bridges and 4 are pedestrian bridges. This paper presents a brief description of the Dura® bridges built, under construction and those still in the tender process. Given are detail of the bridge dimensions, locations, types and shapes of the UHPC bridge beams used. A case study highlighting the 100 meter span Batu 6 Bridge is given. It includes examination of quality control, constructability and how the use of UHPC made the bridge more affordable, more sustainable, easier to build and more economical. To the authors’ knowledge, this bridge appears to be the longest single span road bridge in the world that is constructed primarily with UHPC girders.
