How does water affect the brightness of the concrete surface?

Water and the brightness of concrete

In the experience of many people who are concerned with the quality of concrete surfaces, differences in the water/cement ratio (w/c ratio) are by far the commonest cause of colour and brightness differences in concrete products, followed by efflorescence. In recent years these have been joined by further influences, which are possibly attributable to the use of modern cements and additions. Such changes of colour or brightness are often recognised only with dyed concrete and are attributed to fading of the dye, which is unfounded, as the following article is intended to explain.
